Why do you need this system check-up?
If you bought a property which incorporated a domestic fire sprinkler system already installed, it is likely that your system has been installed to compensate for a reduced standard of fire protection in your property.
What sort of reductions?
These reduced levels of protection could include the following:
Extended escape routes: The distance that you could be expected to travel safely in the event of a fire can be extended by installing a fire sprinkler system. Does this sound like your property?
Escape routes passing through open plan areas: If the 2nd floor level is above a certain height there must be a protected means of escape through to an outside door. Do you have a 3 storey house with a staircase descending to an open plan lounge? Do you have a loft conversion with open stair case to the ground floor?
Poor access for a fire tender: Some housing developments are built without adequate access for the fire & rescue services. If a fire & rescue vehicle cannot park within 45 metres of a property, a fire sprinkler can be installed to compensate for the delay incurred by rolling out 45 meters of fire hose.
What does this mean to me?
What this means to you is that you should have been made aware of the reason WHY your property had a sprinkler system installed in the first place. An incredibly small proportion of these systems are installed to INCREASE THE LEVEL OF FIRE PROTECTION OVER AND ABOVE THE NORMAL REQUIREMENT .
Surely my fire sprinkler system will increase my level of fire protection?
Well, yes it will, but its primary purpose is to compensate for a reduction in the normal restrictions that are imposed on architects when they design domestic properties.
So I have nothing to worry about!
